Decorative candles was recalled on 6 February 2009 under EU Safety Gate alert 0160/09. Choking risk reported by Greece. The product poses a risk of choking as, due to the characteristic form, appearance, colour and size, this product may be mistaken for a foodstuff (small tarts).

Risk Description

The product poses a risk of choking as, due to the characteristic form, appearance, colour and size, this product may be mistaken for a foodstuff (small tarts). This may lead children to put it in their mouth, cut it into pieces and swallow it, which could entail the risk of asphyxia or obstruction of the digestive tract. The product does not comply with the Directive 87/357/EEC on products which, appearing to be other than they are, endanger the health or safety of consumers.

Product Description

Food-imitating decorative candles in the shape of small tarts with various fruits or pieces of fruits on top (approx. dimensions: diameter 4.5 cm, height 4.5 cm). The candles are packed in nine pieces in a transparent box (approximate dimensions: 14 cm x 14 cm x 5 cm), with a cardboard brown coloured base and a decorative brown bow. The candles cannot be bought separately.

Recommended action

Remove the product from children immediately. Check if any small parts are missing. If a child has swallowed a part, seek medical attention immediately. Return the product to the retailer.

Children under 3 years old are at highest risk. Supervise older children as well.
