Decorative article - candies was recalled on 30 January 2009 under EU Safety Gate alert 0128/09. Choking risk reported by Greece. The product poses a risk of choking because, the form and appearance of the product is such that it is likely that children will confuse it with a foodstuff and consequently either place the product in the mouth, suck or ingest it, which could cause choking.

Risk Description

The product poses a risk of choking because, the form and appearance of the product is such that it is likely that children will confuse it with a foodstuff and consequently either place the product in the mouth, suck or ingest it, which could cause choking. The product does not comply with the Directive 87/357/EEC on products which, appearing to be other than they are, endanger the health or safety of consumers.

Product Description

Food imitating product presented as candies in the shape of small red apples with gold coloured leaves, covered with grains of sugar-imitating plastic (approx. dimensions: diameter 3.3 cm, height 3.8 cm). The product is made from spongy, synthetic material and is packed in a transparent box containing 6 pieces (approx. dimensions: 11 cm x 7.5 cm x 4 cm) with gold coloured ribbon. The “candies” cannot be bought separately. The packaging contains no indications or warnings.

This product contains small parts that can detach and pose a choking hazard, or its size and shape make it dangerous for young children if swallowed or placed in the mouth.

Recommended action

Remove the product from children immediately. Check if any small parts are missing. If a child has swallowed a part, seek medical attention immediately. Return the product to the retailer.

Children under 3 years old are at highest risk. Supervise older children as well.
