Risk Description
The pH test carried out by Regional Environmental Protection Agency revealed levels that were significantly lower than the classification limits laid down for corrosive preparations.The information provided on the label and on the safety data sheet does not reflect the real danger posed by the product. The product poses a chemical risk and, since it is corrosive, can cause serious burns. The toxicological information on the safety data sheet states that it can cause slight skin irritation after prolonged contact.The label contains the irritant symbol rather than the corrosive symbol, and the specific risk phrases are not shown.The pH test revealed levels (1.08 ±0.08) that were significantly lower than the classification limits laid down for corrosive preparations (pH = 2).In one case of accidental swallowing, the label was of no help whatsoever. Indeed, it could have led the doctor at the poisons unit to take incorrect action. Fortunately, this was not the case thanks to the intuition of the doctor, who immediately suspected the error on the label.
